We Changed Our Model Names Because Lawyers Are Real
Glint 1.0 is releasing soon. That is the headline. The rest is context. The context involves lawyers. Lawyers scare me. So we are rebranding. The Discord poll decided the new names. I accepted the results. This is how democracy works in tiny model land.
Copying poetic naming conventions from a well-funded corporation seemed clever until legal concepts entered the chat. Now we have new names. They are also poetic. They are also ours.
The New Naming Scheme
Glint replaces Haiku. It is the tiny fast model. It is the one that knows water is H2O now. It is the one that occasionally outputs coherent sentences. Glint 1.0 releases soon. That is the one to watch.
Shard replaces Sonnet. It is the mid-size model. It is the one that waits for cAI-Grid. It is the one that will train when Enderchefcoder finishes the infrastructure. Shard sounds sharp. Shard sounds like it could cut through confusion. That is the hope.
Prism replaces Opus. It is the large model. It is the one that remains a dream. It is the one that will benefit from data refraction and synthesis. Prism bends light. Prism separates spectra. Prism feels appropriately ambitious for a model that does not exist yet.
Why The Change
We ran a Discord poll. The community voted. The results were clear. The new names fit our aesthetic. They also distance us from naming conventions that belong to other organizations. Lawyers appreciate distance. I appreciate not being sued. Everyone wins.
The TMLM prefix is also gone. It stood for TinyMemoryLM. That was what CompactAI was called before we realized the name was too long and too specific. CompactAI is shorter. CompactAI is clearer. CompactAI is what we are now. TMLM is history. History is archived. Archives are quiet.
TinyMemoryLM-Haiku -> Haiku -> Glint
TinyMemoryLM-Sonnet -> Sonnet -> Shard
TinyMemoryLM-Opus -> Opus -> Prism
TMLM- prefix -> deprecated -> removed
# Progress through rebranding. Also through legal caution.
What Stays The Same
Our HuggingFace page will retain the old model names. Existing downloads will continue to work. Existing documentation will remain accessible. We are not breaking anything. We are just adding new names for new releases. The past remains intact. The future gets fresh branding.
Blogs will use the new names. Future models will carry the new names. Discord discussions will gradually shift to the new names. The transition will be gentle. The confusion will be minimal. The lawyers will be satisfied. That is the plan.
What Glint 1.0 Brings
Glint 1.0 is the first model under the new naming scheme. It has one million parameters. It knows water is H2O. It forms complete sentences more often than not. It represents the culmination of our tiny model research so far. It also represents a fresh start. Fresh starts feel good. Fresh starts feel hopeful.
Glint 1.0 will be available on HuggingFace soon. It will carry the new name. It will carry the new prefix. It will carry the lessons learned from previous versions. It will also carry the hope that naming things differently makes them work better. That hope is untested. That hope is also motivating.
Final Thoughts
We changed our model names. Glint replaces Haiku. Shard replaces Sonnet. Prism replaces Opus. TMLM is gone. Lawyers are happy. I am relieved. The community voted. The rebrand is real.
Glint 1.0 releases soon. Watch for it. Try it. Tell me what you think. The new names are ours. The new models are ours. The future is ours to build. Also to name. Naming matters. Getting sued does not matter. Avoiding lawsuits matters more.
Here is to Glint. Here is to Shard. Here is to Prism. Here is to CompactAI without prefixes. Here is to progress through rebranding. Here is to lawyers who keep us honest. Here is to you for reading this far.
